Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk said his focus this season is on leading the Reds’ transition under new manager Arne Slot, despite doubts over his future at Anfield.

The Dutch centre-back’s contract expires in less than a year and there are no signs of an agreement on a contract extension any time soon.

Van Dijk has been fundamental to Liverpool’s success since joining in January 2018 for a then-record transfer fee of £75 million ($99 million) for a defender.

The 2-0 win over Brentford on Sunday was his 100th appearance for Liverpool at Anfield and in that time he has suffered only two defeats.

“I am very calm,” Van Dijk told Sky Sports.

“I want to be and remain important for the club. What happens? We’ll see, but I’m taking the situation very calmly. There’s no reason for me to think about anything else because I have the whole season to play.”

Van Dijk has won the Champions League, Premier League, Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup, FA Cup and two League Cups during his time at Liverpool.

It is expected that the 33-year-old will play a crucial role in helping his compatriot Slot implement his ideas when he faces the difficult task of succeeding Jürgen Klopp.

“Whatever happens now, Anfield has a special place in my heart. And it has been successful. Let’s see what happens,” added Van Dijk.

“Playing for Liverpool, one of the most successful, if not the most successful club in the world. It’s a great feeling to wear the shirt.”

“But there is so much to improve for the club, for me and the team. Let’s see what (the season) brings.”
