Valley Brook man is upset after receiving a citation after cutting his grass

VALLEY BROOK, Okla. (KFOR) – A new homeowner is upset after receiving a citation for something he said he took care of weeks ago.

A Valley Brook resident received a warning for having grass that was too tall, so he mowed it, but a month later he received a citation.

Austen Love has been living in his home for less than a year. He was ready to start the next phase of his life after college, but he didn’t expect something like this to happen right away.

“I know my yard isn’t the prettiest, but I wouldn’t say it’s dangerous,” Love said.

Love is confused and upset. He was mowing his lawn when he received a warning from the city of Valley Brook that his yard was too high.

More than 30 days after the warning, a subpoena arrived.

“It was over $200,” Love said.

He says he received the summons for reasons he cannot understand.

“One of the reasons, they said, was that it posed a danger to the community,” Love said. “That really doesn’t make sense when the grass in the park is usually taller than my yard. And if that poses a danger to the community, then they’re basically saying our park is always dangerous.”

When he received the warning, his grass was above the city limit of 12 inches.

“I agree with that 100%,” Love said. “It had to be cut pretty heavily.”

That’s why he canceled it immediately and is confused that he only received a subpoena so long afterward.

“After over 30 days, a police officer shows up at our door and says, ‘You have to take this away because you didn’t mow the lawn because you got the warning flag,'” Love said.

News 4 reached out to the city of Valley Brook on Friday who said they were aware of the situation and would get back to us, but we have not received a response.

So we reached out to them again on Monday. They said the police chief would contact me, but we still never heard anything.

Love hopes the quote will be removed.

“I’m confused as to how we got a ticket for something we’ve already cut and done,” Love said.

Love says he will continue to fight this with the city until he finds a solution.

His court date is set for December 4th.
