US Open match suspended after player vomits on court; what happened?

play

During his US Open semi-final match against Jannik Sinner on Friday, British player Jack Draper faced an unexpected challenge when he vomited several times on the court during the match.

The first time it went largely unnoticed and Draper quickly cleaned up.

The second time, Draper again quickly wiped the spot with a towel and the referee allowed the game to continue after a brief conversation with both players.

A few plays later, Draper vomited again near the backboard and quickly wiped it away with a towel. The referee again allowed play to continue.

During the next changes, a more thorough cleaning of the baseline area was carried out.

What happened to Jack Draper?

The tournament’s 25th seed was a set down and battling No. 1 seed Jannick Sinner in the first semifinal of the US Open on Friday afternoon when he bent over between points and vomited.

It was not immediately clear what was causing Draper’s discomfort, although he was seen having ice packs on his neck during the changeovers, leaning on his racket between points and appearing quite pale.

Each time, he quickly grabbed a towel from his backcourt box and wiped up the vomit.

There was a brief stoppage in play while the referee addressed both players and Sinner explained that Draper had vomited and then wiped it up.

After the second incident – Sinner had suffered a serious fall in the previous game and apparently injured his left wrist – both men were visited by medical professionals at their benches during the changeover and teams cleaned the field.

After the third incident, the referee asked the grounds staff to clean the area again at the next change of ends.

If Draper had vomited on the field, play would have been stopped and teams would have been called in to clean up rather than allowing a player to do so.

The winner of that match will then face the winner of Friday night’s Francis Tiafoe vs. Taylor Fritz match.

The men’s US Open final is scheduled for Sunday, with an American – Fritz or Tiafoe – attempting to win the first men’s title for a US player in over 20 years.
