US Open 2024: Jack Draper against Alex de Minaur in the quarterfinals – what does the Brit have to do to win?

This is new territory for Draper, whose previous best result at a major was a fourth-round appearance in New York last year.

It will also be the first time the Briton has played at the 23,771 capacity Arthur Ashe Stadium – a stadium he has visited every day during his time in the city.

For Draper, however, this was a breakthrough year, as he followed up his first ATP Tour title in June with a remarkable win over Wimbledon champion Alcaraz at Queen’s.

He is currently ranked 25th in the world, the highest of his career so far.

“He has managed not to miss months on tour over a long period of time, so he has a lot more experience,” Britain’s Davis Cup captain Leon Smith told BBC Sport.

“He’s gaining more experience. He’s taking part in the bigger events more often. That way he understands how to behave better.”

Quarterfinal opponent De Minaur is undoubtedly more experienced. He has nine ATP titles to his name and has reached the last eight of three Grand Slam tournaments in a row.

He is also ahead in the direct comparison, having won all three games against Draper.

But like Draper, the 25-year-old Australian has never made it to the semi-finals of a major championship.

“De Minaur is expected to make it difficult and tricky,” Bartoli said.

“Jack has to hit through the field and keep making an impact on him.”
