UPDATE: Funeral services for former City Councilman Moses Freeman will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, August 12, at Second Missionary Baptist Church, 2305 E. Third Street.

PREVIOUS STORY: Chattanooga Mayor Tim Kelly’s office released a statement Sunday announcing the death of former City Councilman Moses Freeman.

Freeman represented the 8th District from 2013 to 2017. Before that, he served as a community leader, city administrator and teacher at Howard University.

“Ginny and I join all Chattanooga residents in mourning the loss of Moses Freeman, a civil rights icon and former City Council member,” said Mayor Tim Kelly. “Chattanooga is a better place thanks to his lifelong dedication and love for his hometown. His example will continue to inspire our community for years to come.”

Former Chattanooga Mayor Andy Berke also expressed his condolences in a social media post.

“Moses Freeman Jr. was one of my heroes. He fought for justice since the 1960s, evolving with the times and always remaining relevant. As a City Council member, he enjoyed tackling issues that he knew might be difficult but would lead to meaningful improvement in the lives of Chattanooga residents. On a personal level, he was charming, witty and generous. I will miss him; may his memory be a blessing,” Berke said.

Demetrus Coonrod, 9th District Councilwoman, said in an emailed statement: “It is with a heavy heart that I hear of the passing of Councilman Moses Freeman Jr., a true hero and beacon of justice in our community. Councilman Freeman was not only a dedicated servant and civil rights icon; he was a shining example whose encouraging presence and cheerful voice continued to be passed on to the next generation.

His unwavering commitment to the fight for justice has left a lasting mark on our community. I am deeply grateful for the moments of laughter and political debate we shared together, and for the invaluable wisdom he imparted to us. His legacy will continue to inspire and guide us.

Councilman Freeman, your service will never be forgotten. Rest in peace.”
