UCLA football: Five things to watch against Rutgers

They played the theme song “The Sopranos” at UCLA practice this week, a reference to the Bruins’ first game in New Jersey in the school’s 105-year football history.

If UCLA doesn’t beat reeling Rutgers in wiseguy land, the Bruins can probably forget about it when it comes to getting a pass for their first Big Ten season.

Next up are Nebraska (5-1), Iowa (4-2) and Washington (4-3), who are likely double-digit favorites against UCLA.

That makes the Bruins’ game against the Scarlet Knights on Saturday at SHI Stadium an even more important part of their rescue mission. Part I didn’t go so well last weekend, as UCLA failed to get a late first down or a final defensive stop in a 21-17 loss to Minnesota in the Rose Bowl, which was its fifth straight loss.

But injury-plagued Rutgers (4-2 overall, 1-2 Big Ten) offers UCLA (1-5, 0-4) another chance to get its first win since its season-opening triumph over Hawaii. The Scarlet Knights have lost two straight games, scoring a combined 14 points in losses to Nebraska and Wisconsin, and could be missing several top players.
