Two former Commanders players who struggled in Week 5 (and one who thrived).

After a 4-1 start for the Washington Commanders, things are looking up for the first time in years. General manager Adam Peters’ dramatic offseason roster move seems more likely to be the right decision with each impressive win coming their way.

Week 5 against the Cleveland Browns was the closest thing to a rally in the NFL. Jayden Daniels wasn’t at his best, but it was more than enough to get the job done behind a defense that has shown positive signs in the last two contests.

With that in mind, we’ll take a look at some former Commanders players and see how Week 5 went for them.

Joey Slye

Another position the commanders seem to have figured out is the kicker. Austin Seibert has been a revelation since joining the team and still has a 100 percent field goal record after another flawless attempt against the Browns.

Last year, Joey Slye was the man playing for Washington. The best way to describe him is contradictory. He would make a 60-yard field goal and then miss an extra point. He’s been pretty solid for the New England Patriots this season, with the exception of this week.

Slye went 1-for-2 on field goal attempts in Week 5 against the Miami Dolphins. His miss came from 33 yards out and would have given the Patriots a 10-7 lead by halftime. This was a major loss of momentum and could be seen as the main reason for New England’s defeat.

Montez sweat

After an elite career with the Washington Commanders, Montez Sweat didn’t have the best second season with the Chicago Bears. That trend continued for the defensive end in Week 5.

The Bears beat the Carolina Panthers, so the defense played well for the most part. Sweat wasn’t one of them. He had a total of just one press and zero tackles in the entire game. He wasn’t particularly successful in run defense either.

Kirk Cousins

After a rough start to the season, Kirk Cousins could be getting back to himself after a huge Week 5 primetime win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The veteran signal caller completed 42 of his whopping 58 pass attempts for 509 yards, four touchdowns and one interception.

His 509 passing yards were good for the Atlanta Falcons’ single-game passing yards record. Cousins put the team on his back and distributed the ball to everyone on his offense. He led a final regulation attack, setting up a game-winning field goal by Younghoe Koo.

In overtime, Cousins completed a pass to KhaDarel Hodge for a 45-yard touchdown, winning the game.
