Tua Tagovailoa, Tyreek Hill, Mo Kamara and more

Part 2 of the Miami Dolphins On SI Bye Weekend Mailbag:

From Richard Hulme (@RichardHulme7):

Who do you think will be more influential as a dangerous passer after the bye-bye week? OBJ or Jonnu Smith?

Hey Richard, that’s a great question. I think because he’s likely to catch more passes near the line of scrimmage and therefore could be more of an outlet, I think Jonnu will consistently get more targets than OBJ. But I think OBJ will also become a factor.

From ChrisS (@Dolphinshilight):

How sustainable is it to have a QB like Tua? Does he have some sort of injury clause or is there a way to get rid of him in the near future to find a QB who can take hits better?

Hey Chris, the first is a very good question that the Dolphins need to answer sooner rather than later. Tua was able to avoid injuries in 2023, but he simply isn’t built to last, so the Dolphins would be wise to at least protect themselves better with a higher quality backup. And there are injury guarantees in Tua’s contract, so the Dolphins can’t simply “move him away” in the near future without having to deal with cap implications.

From Finn (@Finn1050525):

What is Tua’s status? Does he practice, throw, or participate in any way?

Tua has been busy being with his teammates and throwing on the sidelines, but he is not allowed to practice until he can return from IR, which will be after the game in Indianapolis next Sunday.

From Jorge Boyd (@raga1922):

Which team can Tua come off IR against?

Hi Jorge, as just stated, Tua will be eligible to return and begin training after the Week 7 game against the Colts.

From Bag of Donuts (@BgofDonuts1):

Can we expect better play from the Dolphins offense and QB next week? Will the Dolphins trade Tyreek Hill before the trade deadline?

Hey BOD, yes, with Tyler Huntley at quarterback we can expect the offense to perform better week to week. It’s only logical: the longer he’s on offense, the more comfortable he’ll be on offense. As for a Tyreek trade, I just don’t think it will happen because it would mean a fresh start for a team that is all-in, and it would also be hard for Stephen Ross to digest after paying a big check for issued a signing bonus for his last contract extension.

From Mark Lever (@markFinsfan):

So I’m flying to Indianapolis to watch the game. What do you think our realistic chances are of getting this win? Who is the most important player in this game for us?

Hey Mark, the Dolphins can definitely beat the Colts at Lucas Oil Stadium, although it won’t be an easy matchup regardless of whether the Dolphins play Anthony Richardson or Joe Flacco at QB. The most important player will almost always be the quarterback, so make it Tyler Huntley.

From Russell Price (@RussellHPrice):

Why would Shedeur Sanders release a video of himself lacing up white and orange soccer cleats? Obviously those aren’t the colors of Colorado, but they are the colors of a team he was recently linked to through his coach/father.

Hey Russell, I think you just answered the question. I think it’s a signal that, all things being equal, Deion Sanders would like to see his son play for the Dolphins, and Shedeur clearly seems fine with that. Of course there is the small matter of the design.

From Common Reader (@SnackService1):

Why no Mo?

Hey CR, based on what I’ve learned about Anthony Weaver and his thoughts as a DC, my guess is that Mohamed Kamara’s run-stopping ability doesn’t appeal to him yet and the Dolphins may fear he’ll be exposed if you do threw in the lineup. For what it’s worth, Weaver has said he wants Kamara to learn from Emmanuel Ogbah because they have similar skills.

From Big Ern McDolhpin (@dana_buice):

Seeing this offense without Tua makes me really appreciate the guy. What are the chances that the Dolphins will be back in the top 10 in offense when he returns? Looking at the schedule now and having a better idea of who the teams are, is there reason to hope that the Dolphins will turn things around?

Hey Dana, based on what we saw for most of last season, the Dolphins may be in the top 10 in offense again, but given the final month of last season and the first game and a half before that, there is reason to be justified Worry Tua was injured. And I don’t know if the Dolphins need that, as much as they need it for the offense to win games here and there when the defense doesn’t. And yes, based on the schedule, I absolutely believe the Dolphins can turn things around. Will do? Who knows. That’s why they play the games.

From UKFinFan (@UKFinFan187104):

Also, do you see any signs of McDaniel changing his approach to the team? His player-friendly approach is great when we’re winning games, but is there something to be said for a more forceful approach when some players just aren’t performing to their abilities (or their paycheck)? Do you think the Dolphins will seek help on defense? Is there any truth to these Hill trade rumors?

No, I haven’t seen any signs, at least publicly, that McDaniel is changing his approach. No, I don’t think the Dolphins are looking for help at guard because I think they are still happy with the personnel they have. And no, I don’t buy the Hill “rumors” because they’re just people who understand the connections between the Chiefs and their help on offense, and Tyreek, who always seems to be looking forward to his good old days in KC longs. There’s little reason for the Dolphins to make this move unless they get a great return, and that’s not the way the Chiefs are going about it.

From Tesh Patel (@FreshTesh91):

Where do we stand with Isaiah Wynn and Bradley Chubb? I hope to have reinforcements again soon.

Hi Tesh, we’ve seen both players in and around the facility over the last few weeks, which is a positive sign, but there really hasn’t been an update offered. Anything I give you in terms of a timeline would be pure guesswork.
