TSU welcomes Homecoming Day with its annual parade down Jefferson Street

“Get Geeked, Get Geeked, Homecoming Week!” Led by Tennessee State’s “The Aristocrat of Bands,” this year’s homecoming parade celebrated the 112th anniversary of Nashville’s only public HBCU (historically black college or university).

From local political leaders and middle and high school bands to dance groups and the popular TSU Homecoming Court, members of the school and greater community lined Jefferson Street to cheer on the talent.

“Homecoming is a time for celebration but also for reflection on the college years,” said TSU graduate J’lissa Harmon. Harmon made the long drive from Alabama because returning home allows her to see friends and former classmates she doesn’t get to see often.

As the floats traveled along the historic road that connects TSU to Fisk University and Meharry Medical College, the community of all ages basked in the warm sunshine and danced to the sounds of the late, great Frankie Beverly’s “We Are One.”

“I would drive twice as long as it took if it meant I could return to my alma mater and remember my years on this famous campus.”

Saturday’s parade marks the start of homecoming day proper, where the TSU Tigers will face Eastern Illinois University at 5 p.m. at Nissan Stadium.

As part of their HBCU series, ESPN’s First Take visited the school and hosted their live show at the Averitte Amphitheater. This is the second stop, the first being Howard on September 20th and the last at Clark Atlanta & Morehouse College on November 8th.
