Try Olympic sports in DC, from boxing to rock climbing to trampolining – NBC4 Washington

It goes without saying that many of us watching the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris are thinking, “I could probably do that too!”

Luckily, there are several places in Washington DC where you can try your hand at some Olympic sports. From rock climbing to kayaking, there’s something for everyone to get into the Olympic spirit.

So why just watch when you can join in? Immerse yourself in these Olympic-inspired activities right here in DC and see where your new skills take you!

badminton

In both Gaithersburg and Columbia, the Capital Badminton Academy (CBA) offers court rentals for groups wishing to play. Individual players without a group can contact the CBA in advance to make playing arrangements with others.

Boxing

BASH founder Alex Trakas told News4’s Tommy McFly that she started her gym specifically with the goal of getting more women into exercise.

Canoe slalom and sprint (kayaking)

Head to National Harbor, where REI Co-op rents kayaks. While you won’t find the whitewater rapids of an Olympic course, you can still enjoy paddling on the river’s calmer waters. Here’s our complete guide to kayaking in the District.

Ride a bike

Did you know that cyclist and gold medalist Kristin Faulkner only started competing in the sport about seven years ago?

Grab a bike from Capital Bikeshare, which has over 600 stations throughout the city. For a more structured experience, Unlimited Biking at The Wharf offers guided tours – an ideal way to explore the city.

Equestrian sports

The Rock Creek Horse Center in Rock Creek Park offers pony rides for children. Although rides are not currently possible, it is still a great place for families to experience the joy of horseback riding.

Five Iron Golf in Penn Quarter offers virtual swing simulators, perfect for practicing your swing. If you’re looking for some fun, try mini golf at the Puttery or Swingers in Dupont Circle, where you can enjoy themed cocktails and a lively atmosphere. There’s also a brand new mini golf course in East Potomac Park.

Gymnastics: Trampoline

Want to jump as high as the Olympians? Get Air and Launch trampoline parks in Maryland and Virginia offer you the chance to do flips and fly like the U.S. team.

Rowing and sailing

Boating in DC rents sculls (rowboats) at the Thompson Boat House in Georgetown. For sailing, visit the Washington Sailing Marina in Alexandra, where you can also rent kayaks.

Sport climbing

The Bouldering Project in Eckington features a 16.7 metre overhang wall and an extensive climbing area, making it the perfect place to test your climbing skills.

Sportrock has locations in Alexandria, Gaithersburg and Sterling and there’s even a Groupon deal for introductory classes (ages 14 and up only).

With locations in Rockville, Maryland and Crystal City, Virginia, Movement is also a great place for people of all ages to get started in the exciting sport of climbing.

To squeeze

There was no squash at the Paris Olympics, but you can expect to see it in Los Angeles in 2028.

Squash on Fire in the West End offers non-membership play, and is a great opportunity to try out this fast-paced sport.

Table tennis

Kraken Kourts has tables available at its Rhode Island Ave NE and Penn Quarter locations. For a more social setting, SPIN DC Downtown offers a unique ping pong club experience with specialty cocktails and food. Comet Ping Pong is a neighborhood favorite and Breadsoda offers ping pong on Tuesdays. Penn Social is another option.
