Trump’s rally at Huntington Place prompts postponement of plans for Detroit fitness trade show

DETROIT – A recently scheduled presidential campaign event is impacting plans for a local media company’s healthcare expo scheduled to take place later this week.

The Detroit Free Press Marathon’s annual Health & Fitness Expo, scheduled for Friday, Oct. 18, at Huntington Place in Detroit will change its layout as former President Donald Trump holds an evening rally at the venue.

The fair will take place as planned on Friday from 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Trump’s campaign rally is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m., the same time as the mass’s end time.

On Saturday, October 19th, the opening hours of the fair were extended from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m

“We appreciate all of the people who work extra hard to ensure that the bib number distribution runs smoothly and that the fair remains a great experience for our guests,” said Vice President and Race Director Aaron Velthoven. “Our special thanks go to the staff at Huntington Place and Convention & Show Services, the Teamsters who help set up our show floor, my dedicated racing team and our amazing volunteers. We’re Detroiters, and we’re going to roll up our sleeves and get the job done.”

Event security and logistics for Friday

The Detroit Free Press Marathon announced key safety protocols for Friday at Huntington Place, which are subject to change:

– The trade fair will be moved from Hall B to Hall A, creating greater separation from the security area of the campaign event. The new location is closer to Congress Street on the north side of Huntington Place.

– On Friday, the rooftop patio at Huntington Place will be closed from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m.

– Once the deck reopens, a security checkpoint will be set up at the base of the Helix on Congress Street where Secret Service agents will inspect vehicles. Delays are to be expected and it is recommended to avoid rooftop parking on Friday.

– Those parking on the rooftop terrace are asked to use Towers One or Two to access the Huntington Place concourse. Tower Three leads to a safe area.

– Detroit Police will be stationed on Washington Boulevard to direct traffic. They allow vehicles to enter the fire trail and Huntington Place VIP circle.

– Road closures around the venue may affect travel to and from the trade fair during the election campaign event.

The fair is expected to attract more than 50,000 visitors between Friday and Saturday.
