Trump wants to oust West; Kamala Harris meets with Barack Obama and Bruce Springsteen

Former Rep. Fred Upton, R-Mich., today endorsed Harris for president, saying in a statement released by the vice president’s campaign that he “has never voted for a Democrat for president until now.”

“More than 30 former Republican members of Congress have now publicly stated that they will not support the former president and will vote for Vice President Harris. “I am proud to add my name to this list as I have already cast my vote for Vice President Kamala Harris to be our next President of the United States,” Upton said.

Upton said he is confident Harris will unite people, strengthen the economy and do things for the country. He also said leading Republicans have called on Trump to stop the personal attacks, falsehoods and false claims about the 2020 election.

“Instead of heeding this advice, we see heavy-handed behavior on most forums on an almost daily basis that is unacceptable,” he said.

“I was at the U.S. Capitol on January 6 and witnessed firsthand the violence that attempted to overtake the legitimate counting of each state’s electoral votes,” Upton said. “I spent time with the brave Capitol Police who did their best.” I protected and defended the Constitution that terrible day. That day was a tragedy for our democracy, and Donald Trump is wrong to claim that everything he did was “entirely appropriate” when he directly threatened the peaceful transition from one administration to the next. He is unfit to serve as commander in chief again.”

Upton served in Congress from 1987 to 2023 and was among 10 House Republicans who broke away from Democrats and voted with Democrats to impeach Trump in the second impeachment trial following the January 6 insurrection.

Upton has held leadership positions in Congress, including as chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee and vice chairman of the bipartisan Problem Solvers Caucus.
