Donald Trump already had a rough night on Tuesday, as his performance in the debate was criticized by Democrats and Republicans alike. And then arguably the most famous person in the world jumped in to support his opponent, Kamala Harris.

“I’m voting for (Harris) because she fights for the rights and causes that I believe need a fighter to represent them,” Swift wrote in an Instagram post minutes after the presidential debate ended on Tuesday. “I think she is a calm, gifted leader and I believe we can accomplish so much more in this country when we are led by calm, not chaos.”

When asked about Swift’s support of the Democratic candidate on Wednesday morning, Trump tried to brush off the remark, telling Fox News that he prefers Swift’s close friend Brittany Mahomes to the singer.

“If you want to know the truth, I actually like Ms. Mahomes a lot better,” Trump said. “She’s a big Trump fan. I was not a Taylor Swift fan.”

He continued, “It was just a matter of time. … You couldn’t possibly support Biden. You look at Biden – you couldn’t support him. But she’s a very liberal person. She always seems to support a Democrat and will probably pay a price for that … in the market. But no, I liked Brittany.”

Let’s unpack this.

It’s no secret why Trump wanted to draw Fox News viewers’ attention to Brittany Mahomes, best known as the wife of Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes. She has made headlines in recent weeks for publicly supporting Trump. The outsized interest in Mahomes’ political leanings this year is likely due to her close friendship with Swift, who supported Biden in 2020 and now Harris in 2024. (Swift began dating Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce around the time she started hanging out with Mahomes last year.)

But there appears to be no animosity between Swift and Mahomes. The two were spotted embracing at the US Open in New York City over the weekend.

Trump told Fox News he was “not a Taylor Swift fan.” In the past, he seemed to have been one. In 2012, he tweeted that he was “glad to hear” she was co-hosting a Grammy nominations special. “Taylor is amazing!” he wrote. And he apparently felt so invested in Swift’s personal life that he felt the need to comment on one of her past relationships that same year.

Next, Trump’s brief response to Swift’s rebuff is to say that she “couldn’t possibly” have supported Biden. Well, he’s on to something there; it would have been odd if she had supported someone who isn’t running.

As for his “Marketplace” prediction, only time will tell if Swift’s endorsement will cause her to lose fans. But her support for Biden in 2020 didn’t seem to hurt her career—she’s arguably more popular now than ever. And a 2023 Morning Consult poll found that the majority of Swift’s fans lean Democrat.
