Alaskans also appear to have voted to raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour by 2027 while ensuring paid sick leave for workers. As of Wednesday morning, 56 percent of Alaska residents supported the measure, with 76 percent of voters reporting. Trump has since won the state and Democratic Representative Mary Peltola lost her seat in the House of Representatives.

In Arizona, where the presidential race is still underway, voters also rejected a ballot measure aimed at reducing the wages of tipped workers almost three to one. In Nebraska, where Trump handily defeated Kamala Harris, voters approved a measure guaranteeing paid sick leave in similar numbers. 74 percent voted to allow workers in both large and small companies to earn paid sick time. Nebraska’s union leader, independent candidate Dan Osborn, however didn’t win. The Senate candidate who led a strike against Kellogg’s in 2021 lost to Republican incumbent Deb Fischer on Tuesday night.

Oddly enough, similar ballot measures in Arizona and Massachusetts had opposite results. While Arizona residents rejected the proposal to “pay up to 25% per hour less than the minimum wage” for tipped workers Proposal 138, Massachusetts voters appear to have voted down their question 5, which would have increased the minimum wage for tipped workers. This decision means that workers in Massachusetts will continue to pay a subminimum wage for tipped work, rather than being brought up to the state minimum wage of $15 an hour by 2029. At the same time, residents of Massachusetts maybe voted Give rideshare drivers the right to join a union.
