Trump distances himself from the Puerto Rican comedian’s comments

The Trump campaign is distancing itself from comedian Tony Hinchcliffe’s comments during former President Donald Trump’s New York rally at Madison Square Garden on Sunday after he jokingly referred to a U.S. territory as a “floating trash island.”

“These are absolutely wild times – they really, really are. And there’s a lot going on. I don’t know if you know this, but there’s literally a floating island of garbage right in the middle of it.” “I think it’s called Puerto Rico right now,” Hinchcliffe said, which immediately earned him criticism from both sides of the aisle.

“Who is this idiot?” asked Tim Walz, Vice President Kamala Harris’ running mate and the governor of Minnesota, who live-streamed his reaction to the event alongside Democratic New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. “If you have an asshole calling Puerto Rico ‘floating trash,’ you should know that’s what they think of you. This is what they think about anyone who makes less money than them,” Ocasio-Cortez added.

“I am disgusted by Tony Hinchcliffe’s racist comment calling Puerto Rico a ‘floating island of trash.’ “This rhetoric does not reflect the values of Republicans,” Maria Elvira Salazar, a Florida Republican who is Cuban-American and American, responded to X in response to the comments.

“This is not a joke. It is completely classless and tasteless,” Rep. Carlos Gimenez, R-Fla., another Cuban American, added online. “Puerto Rico is the crown jewel of the Caribbean and home to many of the most patriotic Americans I know. Tony Hinchcliffe is clearly not funny and definitely does not reflect my values or those of the Republican Party.”

Meanwhile, amid the backlash to Hinchcliffe’s joke, the Trump campaign released a statement distancing itself from the controversial remarks.

“This joke does not reflect the views of President Trump or the campaign,” senior Trump campaign adviser Danielle Alvarez said in a statement to Fox News Digital.

Although Hinchcliffe was sharply criticized by both Republicans and Democrats, he sharpened his comments.

“These people have no sense of humor,” the comedian wrote in a post on X aimed at Ocasio-Cortez and Walz.

“It’s wild that a vice presidential candidate would take time out of his ‘busy schedule’ to analyze a joke taken out of context to make it appear racist,” Hinchcliffe said.

“I love Puerto Rico and vacationing there. I made fun of everyone…look at the whole set,” he argued. “I’m a comedian, Tim…maybe it’s time to change your tampon.”
