Trump boasts that he gets “better ratings” than the grieving family

I’ve seen a lot of heinous things happen during political campaigns, but this was way beyond twisted. Who weighs the words of a grieving family or the weight of their grief on a scale?

The death of Amber Thurman, a 28-year-old mother, is directly linked to Georgia’s draconian abortion ban, a ban that exists because Donald Trump proudly oversaw the end of Roe. v. Wade during his presidency.

At a Fox News town hall focused on women’s issues – taped in Atlanta on Tuesday and broadcast on Wednesday – Trump, the network’s host and the town hall attendees treated Thurman’s death and her family’s grief like a laugh line.

Host Harrison Faulkner noted that Thurman’s family had held a press call prior to the Fox News event hosted by Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris’ campaign, and scathingly told Trump: “Amber Thurman’s family has come to a press call expressed, and she “We are currently carrying out a so-called preliminary decision on our town hall.”

“Oh, that’s nice,” Trump said dismissively as the crowd giggled.

Then he said, “We’ll get better ratings, I promise.” And Faulkner and the crowd burst into laughter.

Trump delivers one of the most despicable moments of his campaign

I’ve seen a lot of heinous things happen during political campaigns, but this was way beyond twisted. Who weighs the words of a grieving family or the weight of their grief on a scale? Who laughs at a family talking about the death of their loved one?

It is an integral part of the darkness and cruelty that Trump’s campaign has faced in the final weeks of the presidential campaign.

Opinion: Trump is inventing a racist, dystopian version of America that only he can save us from

Amber Thurman’s tragic death was deemed “avoidable”

During Tuesday’s press call, Thurman’s mother, Shanette Williams, said, “Amber was not a statistic. She was loved by a family.”

Thurman died in 2022. Georgia’s abortion ban had forced her to travel to North Carolina for reproductive health services because she had just completed Georgia’s six-week abortion ban. She was given abortion pills, but a rare complication occurred after she returned to Georgia.

Opinion: Melania Trump says she supports abortion rights. Don’t forget what your husband did.

A ProPublica report states: “She showed up at Piedmont Henry Hospital needing a routine procedure to remove the uterus from her uterus, called a dilation and curettage, or D&C. But it wasn’t until this summer that her state made carrying out the procedure a criminal offense, with a few exceptions. Any doctor who violates Georgia’s new law could be prosecuted and face up to a decade in prison. Thurman waited in pain in a hospital bed…as doctors monitored how her infection spread, her blood pressure dropped and her organs began to fail. It took 20 hours for the doctors to finally operate. By then it was too late.”

ProPublica reported that the Georgia Maternal Mortality Review Committee found that Thurman’s death was “preventable” and that the hospital’s delay – due to the state’s abortion law – “had a major impact on her fatal outcome.”

Donald Trump laughs easily at tragedy – remember that

There’s nothing funny about that. It’s a tragedy. But Trump, Faulkner and many in the all-female crowd at the town hall laughed at Trump’s dismissive attitude and his “We’ll get better ratings” joke.

I hope voters pay attention to these random, casual acts of cruelty by Trump and those around him. They are the things that rob us of our humanity.

These are the things voters should vehemently reject.
