Trump blames technical problems for his ‘strange’ voice in X-Chat with Musk

Top line

Former President Donald Trump blamed technical issues for distorting his voice during his conversation with Elon Musk at X Spaces late Tuesday, responding to mockery of his alleged “wiretapping” by Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign.

Key data

In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump said the “complexity of modern devices and cell phone technology” caused his voice to sound “a little different and strange” at certain points in the chat.

During his chat with Musk on Monday, several X users, including the official account of Harris’ campaign, pointed out that they believed Trump had a lisp and slurred his words – a line of attack that the vice president’s campaign continued on Tuesday.

However, the Trump team had so far dismissed questions about his distorted voice and always responded to inquiries from various media with the words: “It must be your ears.”

Trump added in his post that his campaign team had “published a real and perfect recording of the conversation” on its X-account. Musk also reposted it, mentioning the “higher sound quality.”

In the post, Trump also praised Musk, saying: “Elon himself is very special – and I thank him for this strong support.”

News Peg

Earlier on Tuesday, Trump had sharply criticized major media outlets for focusing on X’s technical issues that delayed the start of the discussion. In a post on Truth Social, the former president claimed his two-and-a-half-hour conversation with Musk had garnered “an absolute record number of views/hits” and said, “All the fake news wants to report is that the servers crashed (due to the huge volume!) and the broadcast started a little late.”

Important background

On Monday, Trump answered a series of friendly questions from Musk in a discussion about X that was affected by several technical glitches. The discussion was scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. ET but was delayed for nearly 45 minutes because several users were unable to access the streaming link. X users who were able to join the link were initially greeted with hold music. Musk blamed the outage on a “massive DDOS (distributed denial of service).”
