Trump blames Biden and Harris’ “rhetoric” for recent assassination attempt and says he will “save the country”

EXCLUSIVE: Former President Trump said the “rhetoric” of President Biden and Vice President Harris was the reason he was “shot” after a second assassination attempt on his life since July. He told Fox News Digital that the suspected shooter “acted” on the “highly inflammatory language” used by Democrats.

Trump spoke exclusively to Fox News Digital on Monday morning, just a day after he was forced off the Trump International golf course in West Palm Beach, Florida, after the Secret Service spotted an armed man in the bushes.

The suspected shooter, Ryan Wesley Routh, was carrying an AK-47 rifle aimed through the chain-link fence toward the grassy area, a Go-Pro camera, and two backpacks. He fled the scene but was stopped and arrested on I-95.

Authorities are treating the incident as an apparent assassination attempt against Trump.

Trump had been safe since July after the second assassination attempt on him.

“He believed the rhetoric of Biden and Harris and acted on it,” Trump said of the shooter in an interview with Fox News Digital. “Their rhetoric is getting me shot when I’m the one who’s going to save the country and they’re the ones destroying the country — both from within and without.”

Trump referred to previous comments by Biden and Harris in which they portrayed Trump as a “threat to democracy” while telling Americans that they were “leaders of unity.”

“They are the opposite,” Trump said. “These are people who want to destroy our country.”

He added: “It is called the enemy from within. It is the real threat.”

A background check on the name provided by officers, Ryan Wesley Routh, revealed that he currently lives in Hawaii and has been in conflict with police dozens of times since at least the 1990s.

Routh previously echoed Biden and Harris’ anti-Trump comments on his social media pages that “democracy is on the ballot” this year and that Democrats “can’t lose.”

Routh frequently published political posts and donated exclusively to Democratic candidates and causes.

“They do it with a combination of rhetoric and complaints that they’re dragging me into,” Trump said. “That’s the kind of thing that dangerous idiots like the shooter listen to — that’s the rhetoric they listen to, and the same goes for the first one.”

Democrats, meanwhile, have repeatedly blamed Trump for the escalation of the situation and accused him of being a “threat to democracy,” particularly because of his handling of the riots at the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021.

Over the weekend, Biden accused Trump of trying to incite violence, referring to his comments about Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio.

Biden said at an event over the weekend that “every president should reject hate in America” and “not incite it.”

The White House, Harris’ campaign and the office of Minnesota Governor Time Walz, who is also Harris’ running mate, did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment.

Trump also said Biden and Harris’ policies are “destroying” the country “by allowing millions of very dangerous migrants to pour into the country and destroy our country and our cities.”

“On the outside, we are weak and powerless and no longer respected by the world,” Trump said.

Meanwhile, Trump sharply criticized the media in retrospect after the debate against Harris last week.

“The media is made up of idiots who are spreading (the Democrats’) garbage and their sick philosophies and will protect them at all costs, and they can’t believe they can get away with it,” Trump said. “The Democrats are completely protected by the media.”

Trump said the debate on ABC News last week was “so biased and so out of control.”

“Harris was the one who lied about Project 2025, she lied about abortion, she lied about everything,” Trump said. “She corrected me.”

“It was three against one,” he said. “I was surprised by David Muir. I thought he was a top-class player, but he’s just a suck-up like everyone else.”

But 50 days before Election Day, Trump warned Democrats to watch their rhetoric.

“You use highly inflammatory language,” he said. “I can use it too – and much better than you – but I don’t.”

The latest assassination attempt came after Trump was shot in the ear at a rally in Pennsylvania on July 13 by a gunman who killed one person and injured others before he himself was shot dead by police.
