Troye Sivan confronts Rush video diversity controversy – Music News

Troye Sivan has opened up about the backlash his Rush music video generated.

The 29-year-old Australian pop singer is currently on tour with Charli XCX and is receiving critical praise for their joint concert.

However, he came under fire last summer when he released his single “Rush” as some were upset about the lack of diversity in the body sizes of the dancers in the accompanying music video.

The former child actor addressed the criticism to Billboard, saying, “I think one of the benefits of being online all the time since I was 10 is basically that I kind of understand how the online conversation moves and changed.”

“(I know) when to listen and when not to listen – because it’s important to protect your own mind. Listening, learning and engaging in conversations, but also knowing when something is just someone sitting in their basement trolling just for the sake of trolling… It was really helpful to have an understanding of how to navigate.”

He then praised his current tour co-star, who served as the soundtrack over the summer following the release of her critically and commercially successful album Brat.

Sivan said, “Seeing her win was just one of the greatest joys of the last year for me, especially seeing her win at something where Charli does her best Charli.”

He added: “She always had this power within her and always had this vision – (she was) just waiting for the culture to catch up with her. It was so rewarding to watch.”
