Tropical storms Nadine and Oscar form on the same morning

Tropical Storm Nadine and Hurricane Oscar formed quickly following a surge in hurricane season activity, just weeks after Hurricanes Helene and Milton devastated the southeastern United States.

Both storms quickly intensified, with Nadine having a 20% to 50% chance of developing within two nights and Oscar growing from just 10% on Friday to a fully formed hurricane by Saturday morning.

Forecasts earlier in the season had warned of a particularly active season, predicting 17 to 24 named storms, of which eight to 13 had the potential to become hurricanes. So far, the 2024 season has produced 15 named storms, 10 of which developed into hurricanes, including four major hurricanes of Category 3 or higher.

Oscar is the eighth named storm since Sept. 24, making it the most named storm formation recorded between Sept. 24 and Oct. 19, Colorado State University meteorologist Philip Klotzbach wrote on X.

Neither Nadine nor Oscar is expected to have any impact on the United States or Texas.

Tropical Storm Nadine reached Belize City around 11 a.m

“Localized areas of flash flooding are possible along Nadine’s path through southern Mexico, northern Guatemala and northern Belize,” said the latest update from the National Hurricane Center (NHC). “Tropical storm conditions are expected along portions of the Belize coast and Yucatan Peninsula through this afternoon.”

Meanwhile, Oscar briefly formed into a tiny hurricane east of the Turks and Caicos Islands, triggering tropical storm warnings for the southeastern Bahamas and northeastern Cuba provinces. The Air Force Reserve Hurricane Hunters reported that Oscar strengthened faster than expected, with sustained winds of at least 80 miles per hour.

“Locally heavy rainfall is possible in the Turks and Caicos Islands and the southeastern Bahamas later today and overnight,” the NHC statement said. “These rains are expected to spread to eastern Cuba on Sunday.”
