Police Officer Ryan Londregan was returned to active duty Monday after an internal investigation cleared him of any wrongdoing in the shooting of Ricky Cobb II.

What we know

Earlier this month, Londregan’s legal team announced that the officer had been exonerated by the Internal Affairs Bureau after charges against him in the shooting were dropped, clearing the way for Londregan’s return to active duty.

On Monday, the Minnesota State Patrol announced that Londregan was back working full-time in Golden Valley. It is unclear if he has returned to patrol duty yet.

background

Trooper Londregan was charged with murder in Cobb’s death following a traffic stop on I-94 in Minneapolis in July 2023.

In June, Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty announced that she was dropping the case against Londregan on the grounds that new evidence made it “impossible” to move the case forward.

Moriarty had been criticized for her handling of the case, including for hiring outside counsel to handle the case and ignoring initial findings from a use-of-force expert.

Reaction from Cobb’s family

Ricky Cobb’s family said they felt betrayed by Moriarty’s decision to drop the case. After Moriarty’s announcement, the family called for an independent investigation into the case.
