Trent Williams’ strike with the San Francisco 49ers is over.

According to his agent, Elite Loyalty Sports, the 49ers agreed to rework Williams’ contract and gave him a three-year, $82.6 million deal. The contract includes $48 million at signing and $25.69 million as a signing bonus.

In 2024, Trent Williams will receive a salary of $27.6 million – more than the original amount of $20.05 million per @eliteloyaltysp. At just over $2 million in fines, that’s about $5 million more than originally estimated.

The 49ers opened training camp without Williams. The superstar left tackle wanted adjust his contract because there was no guaranteed money left on the six-year, $138 million contract he signed in March 2021.

“I knew it could be possible, and I was hoping he would be here,” head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters after the team’s first training camp on July 24. “But I knew it could be possible, and I was pretty confident that it would work out in the long run and he would be here and we would agree on everything. But it’s just one day of practice, and I think Trent will be OK with missing a couple of practices.”

This contract made Williams the highest-paid offensive lineman in NFL history at the time. The contract remains the most expensive of any offensive lineman, but his average annual salary of $23.01 million ranks only fifth.

The 49ers had a similar situation with star running back Christian McCaffrey. His contract no longer had any guaranteed money, so the club gave him a two-year, $38 million extension in June.

Williams’ situation is a little different because the market for an All-Pro left tackle is higher than for an All-Pro running back.

It doesn’t help that the 49ers face a salary cap problem for the next 12 months because quarterback Brock Purdy is eligible for a contract extension next offseason.

Williams and Nick Bosa have already signed contracts worth over $100 million. McCaffrey, Fred Warner, Javon Hargrave, George Kittle and Deebo Samuel all earn at least $15 million per season.

As talented as the 49ers are on both sides of the ball, it’s fair to argue that Williams is their most important player. Even in his 36th season, he’s still considered the league’s best offensive lineman and has made the All-Pro first team each of the last three seasons.

The other four positions on San Francisco’s offensive line have been question marks for years, but that has rarely mattered as Williams continues to be a dominant force at the most important position.

There seemed little doubt that the 49ers would eventually make a deal with Williams. Now that it’s settled, the future Hall of Famer will be ready to bolster the offensive line for the 2024 regular season.
