Tree falls during storm and narrowly misses house

“It just turned white and everything looked like the rain was coming from the side. It’s hard to describe,”

These were the moments that caused one of the trees in Bethany Montgomery’s yard to snap and fall during today’s storms.

Montgomery says the whole thing happened so quickly that she only had seconds to react to the falling tree.

“After about two seconds, I heard a crack and you could see it rocking. I thought it was coming toward the house. So I told the kids to go back to the house and then it just moved slightly and fell over,” Montgomery said.

She says her biggest concern was for her children, who stood next to her at the window and watched the tree fall.

Montgomery added that while no one was injured, the scenario could have been different if the tree had fallen in a different direction.

“Because they were standing right behind me at the window, I thought it was coming in, and we thought we didn’t have enough time to get to the back of the house. So it took me a couple of minutes to calm down. I was all shaky, but they did what I told them when I told him and everyone was safe,” Montgomery said.

Montgomery says she’s shaken but thankful that the damage was minimal and no cars were hit on the road. But she doesn’t know what to do next after the tree fell. And she adds that things only got more complicated when she realized the tree had downed a power line in the area.

“I’m very happy that the house was not hit. This is my first time buying a home, so this is all completely new to me. I’ve owned the house for a little over a year, so I don’t know if I need to call the insurance company because the fence in the yard was destroyed,” Montgomery said.

If a tree falls on your property, experts say you should call your insurance provider immediately.

And if a tree has downed a power line, Indiana Michigan Power advises not to touch the line and to call the power company immediately.
