Tree falls and cuts off power to nearly 500 people on Staten Island

STATEN ISLAND, NY — Nearly 500 customers were temporarily without power on Staten Island Monday after a tree fell on overhead power lines in Richmond.

The outage began at about 11:50 a.m. and affected a total of 497 customers, according to Con Edison’s outage map.

According to information on Con Edison’s website, employees restored power to the area as of 2 p.m.

The outage extended roughly from Richmond, Arthur Kill and Richmond Hill Roads to Clarke Avenue, according to Con Edison’s website.

Con Edison crews were seen working near a fallen tree in the 600 block of Clarke Avenue.

“We will provide details once we have completed the investigation,” the website continued.

According to an Advance/SILive.com photographer on the scene, the tree tore down a large portion of Con Edison’s overhead power lines.

A tow truck parked at the scene of the accident was completely covered by the fallen tree.

A yellow barrier tape with the inscription “No Crossing” was placed around the fallen tree.

At the time of publication, the FDNY and Con Edison did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
