Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek’s network of contributors

Kayla Nicole opens up about her old friendships.

Nicole, 32, guest starred on the Thursday, October 10th episode of Angel Reese’s Podcast, Unapologetic angel, and talked about what her relationships are like with the wives and girlfriends of the Kansas City Chiefs players. The sports journalist was particularly close friends with Brittany Mahomes during her on-again, off-again relationship with Travis Kelce, which lasted from 2017 to 2022. While dating the Chiefs tight end, 35, Nicole was even a bridesmaid at Brittany’s wedding to Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes. In photos Brittany shared from the wedding on Instagram, Nicole can be seen with the bride and her other bridesmaids.

Reese, 22, asked Nicole how her relationship with women changed after she and the Super Bowl champion split. “Were you still friends with the women you were friends with when you were there?” the WNBA star asked. Nicole was visibly uneasy as she laughed awkwardly before answering, “Yes.” However, the influencer explained that while there is no beef, things aren’t the same anymore. “We’re cool (but) we’re not as cool as we were before,” Nicole explained.

Reese questioned the nature of Nicole’s friendships with the other wives and girlfriends, to which the model replied, “It was like family.”

The podcaster expressed compassion for Nicole and told her, “I know this is hard,” to which Nicole agreed.

In 2023, after the Mahomes grew closer to Kelce’s superstar girlfriend Taylor Swift, Nicole unfollowed the family. She explained her decision People magazine and said she needed to “protect herself.”

The Chicago Sky player also asked Nicole if the “negativity” from the pop star’s fans “affected” her.

Nicole made it clear that the hate hurt her. “I would be lying if I said that this level of hate and just online chaos hasn’t affected me. It does. Until today,” she admitted. The model then described the terrible comments she receives on her social media channels, including being called “worthless” and “bum.”

When asked if she had never met her ex, Nicole said “yes” but the couple was unable to communicate publicly about it. “We’ve seen each other in public places, but I think we’re both aware of the nature of his new situation, that there’s just no room for us to communicate publicly or acknowledge each other without something crazy turning into it.” So “Let’s just carry on,” remarked the broadcast journalist.
