Top ranking: Swiatek and Sinner reach semifinals in Cincinnati

Top seeds Iga Swiatek and Jannik Sinner have fended off challenges and reached the semifinals of the Cincinnati Open.

Swiatek extended her winning streak to 15 on Saturday with a 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 victory over 17-year-old Mirra Andreeva.

Swiatek will face world number 3 Arnya Sabalenka, the Australian Open champion who beat number 10 Liudmila Samsonova 6-3, 6-2.

Sinner avenged his loss in the quarterfinals in Montreal last week against No. 6 Andrey Rublev with a 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 win and became the first Italian in the Open Era to reach the semifinals in Cincinnati.

“It was very windy and I tried to play as consistently as possible,” said Australian Open winner Sinner. “It’s the first time I’ve played a semi-final at this venue, so that’s very positive.”

Swiatek and Sabalenka have already met twice this year, with Swiatek winning consecutive finals in Madrid and Rome. Swiatek’s record against the two-time Grand Slam winner is 8-3.

“We are both players who somehow deserve to be in the semifinals and finals because we work very hard,” said Swiatek. “I respect Aryna a lot. Physically, she always fights and has a lot of strength.”

Neither player reached the final in Cincinnati.

Swiatek lost in her first semifinal appearance last year to eventual champion Coco Gauff. Sabalenka is a three-time semifinalist, including each of the last two years.

“We’ve had a lot of great fights in the past,” Sabalenka said. “It’s always a high-intensity match. I’m really looking forward to another great fight against her.”

Sinner will face number 3, Alexander Zverev. Zverev defeated Ben Shelton in the quarterfinals 3:6, 7:6 (7:3), 7:5. Zverev has beaten Sinner four times in a row.

Frances Tiafoe made it to the semifinals for the second year in a row after Hubert Hurkacz retired in the second set due to a calf injury. Tiafoe will face Holger Rune, who defeated Jack Draper 6-4, 6-2, in the final match.

In the other women’s quarterfinal, No. 6 Jessica Pegula beat Leylah Fernandez 6-2, 6-7 (7-1), 7-6 (7-3). Pegula, who successfully defended her title in Canada on Monday, will face Paula Badosa.

Badosa defeated Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 6:3, 6:2.

“Paula is playing really good tennis,” said Pegula. “She has mastered her year and is slowly getting into shape. She is a top player.”
