We’ve had a pretty amazing summer here in Atlanta. With tons of fun events and cool things to do, it might be a little bittersweet to see the summer of 2024 pass by, but remember: There’s even more fun to come this fall! As the holiday season approaches, we know we’re in for lots of treats (and maybe a few hilarious pranks too!).

Some of the most obvious signs of the changing seasons are shorter days and increasing darkness… and that will be happening soon. Tomorrow, September 3, 2024, Atlanta will see its last 8 p.m. sunset of the year. according to the US Naval Observatory.

When does autumn begin?

Of course, it is important to note that cooler weather and earlier sunsets make it safe feel Like fall, the season doesn’t officially begin until all the cafes have pumpkin spice lattes. JUST KIDDING! Autumn officially begins with the autumn equinox on September 22nd. On this day, the night and day hours are of equal length. From then on, the days become shorter and winter begins.

The shortest day of the year will be December 21, 2024. This is the beginning of astronomical winter. Although it “feels like winter” long before December 21st, this is the actual beginning of winter. From then on, the days slowly and gradually get longer.
