Toledo police release footage of a van that witnesses say struck a 70-year-old cyclist

TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – He was hit by the side mirror of a pickup truck while riding his bike, and the scars prove it. Now a 70-year-old Toledo man is trying to find the driver.

Kenny “Vito” Villareal is recovering from the accident that sent him to the hospital.

“I had a concussion. I had eight staples on my head. I had a broken neck. I had broken ribs, two broken ribs and severe internal injuries. I had a collapsed lung,” Villarreal said. “The motorcycle was barely damaged. I just took a big hit.” Witnesses said the van that hit Villarreal never stopped.

“And I got up. I don’t know what happened. I was in shock. I thought I was broken. I thought I had just fallen. I don’t know what happened,” Villarreal said. “I’m just happy to be alive.”

The accident occurred on Friday, August 9, 2024, at approximately 3:54 p.m. Villarreal said he turned from McGregor onto Talmadge and was traveling northbound with traffic just over the line in the shoulder lane.

He said the truck drove toward him and hit him from behind.

“The van, and everyone saw it, and everything is proven. They saw it and they had no problem catching the guy. Now, three weeks later, no pictures and no one has any idea who he is,” Villarreal said. “I can’t even mow my own lawn anymore. He just ruined my life.”

Villarreal, a retired carpenter, also said he was concerned about rising Medicare bills as a result of the crash.

“Thank God I’m alive, but this man must be caught,” Villarreal added. “He can’t just go around beating people up.” He is asking anyone with information that could lead Toledo police to the unidentified van and its driver to come forward.
