Today’s showers bring us some much-needed rain

We’re heading into the second week of October and a few showers are expected for Boston and the rest of New England. We haven’t had any measurable precipitation in Boston so far this month, and today we’re getting our first taste of it as we start the work week.

The showers moving across the region this morning will move further east throughout the day. The greatest risk for these showers is in the first half of the day, with rain tapering off in the afternoon and evening.

Some of you may even experience an October thunderstorm this morning, making your morning commute wetter than the evening. In fact, the sky may actually clear as night falls.

The wind will be south-southeast for the first half of the day before turning west by the end of the day – but it won’t be very strong. Nighttime temperatures will drop back down to 40°C under partly cloudy skies.

After today’s rain, the air will remain dry and conditions sunny over the next few days.

A look at the coming week

Later this week we will see temperatures around 30°C as the coldest air of the early fall season moves in. This is completely normal and some of the normally colder locations are likely to see light frost Wednesday night into Thursday morning and again Thursday night into Friday morning.

For those of you who live in areas that typically experience early frosts, it is a good idea to cover sensitive vegetation and incorporate tropical plants. Many of them don’t like temperatures below 40 degrees anyway. I’ve already started putting most of my less substantial items inside.

As far as precipitation goes, we continue to be in deficit this fall, and while I’m expecting a tenth to perhaps a half of an inch from the heavier rains this morning, most of us won’t see any chance of rain until Sunday evening or Monday.

At this point, another weather system will likely bring additional, much-needed rain.

Hurricane Milton

But the big weather story this week is Hurricane Milton, which will hit the west coast of Florida. Milton is likely to make landfall near the Tampa area, causing a large, life-threatening storm surge and further damage in a region already hit hard by Hurricane Helene last month.

Monday’s breakdown

Southern New England: There will be showers in the area this morning, tapering off this afternoon and dissipating overnight. Temperatures will be in the high 60s today, falling into the 40s tonight.

Western fair: Rain showers will end this morning with partial clearing later this afternoon. Highs will be in the 60s. Low temperatures tonight will be in the high 40s.

Cape and Islands: Look for a series of showers during the first half of the day, then taper off later in the afternoon. The shower could last until late afternoon, followed by clearing this evening. Highs will be in the 60s, lows will be in the 40s.

Northern New England: Look for showers in the area in the morning, which will taper off by the end of the day. Temperatures will be in the low to mid 60s.
