To my friends who support Trump, rich and poor

My dear rich Trumpists,

Well, here we go. Voting has already begun. It’s probably too late to change your mind.

Here are the major new tax cuts you all envision in a Trump victory. Ra. Ra. There is a lot of money to be made in this election, especially considering that tens of millions are at stake and that the victorious Democrats could make changes to the estate tax.

I know that this is the driving reason for your support of a profanity-spewing, fascism-seeking criminal. Have you all recently heard him talk about the size of a dead golfer’s genitals in an arena full of men, women and children?

I bet most of the chatter in your club’s dining rooms doesn’t include exclamations about penis size.

I know you think Trump is a classless, amoral fraudster who ended up bankrupting many of his own companies. They know he’s also a foul-mouthed jerk who was convicted of sexual assault by a jury of his peers.

I’m sure none of you want your daughters to be left alone in a room with them.

The problem for all of you this election season, of course, is that the old Republican coalition that has kept Connecticut’s conservative rich voters happy for so long is faltering.

The anti-abortion wing of the coalition hasn’t caused a problem for decades, and your daughters haven’t blamed you for voting for pro-life Republican candidates since Roe vs. Wade was in place and access to abortion was safe.

But Trump killed that. The dog caught the car.

The other wheel that has gotten the Republican coalition rolling belongs to the crazy gun enthusiasts who do not accept any kind of gun control for weapons of war, common-sense background checks, and restrictions on gun ownership that a large majority of Americans support.

But as mass shootings increase and one’s own grandchildren are increasingly put at risk in classrooms, tolerance for this kind of callousness toward gun violence is dwindling. It is becoming increasingly difficult to explain to your children support for a party that refuses to stop them.

Can you imagine that 20 years ago, as a conservative, you supported a candidate who exploded the deficit like Trump did during his time in office?

Another difficult pill for Reagan-era Republicans to accept in the Trump era is the former president’s apparent alliance with Vladimir Putin. To see this, you don’t even have to believe the reporting in Pulitzer Prize winner Bob Woodward’s new book about Trump’s continued post-presidency dialogue with Putin or his personal life-saving assistance to the Russian dictator during the pandemic.

Finally, Trump himself told us about Putin’s “genius” in invading Ukraine and his own plans to facilitate Ukraine’s capitulation to him.

Ronald Reagan must be spinning in his grave to see Trump Republicans preparing to abandon NATO. Trump has turned the GOP into the party that supports world dictators, not the freedoms of a democratic Europe.

Hungry for new tax cuts, you won’t listen to the many Nobel Prize winners and people in his administration who know him well, including chiefs of staff and four-star generals, who warn about the economic disasters of tariff taxes. the fascist regime that awaits him if he wins.

It’s all embarrassing. I know you won’t put a Trump bumper sticker on the BMW.

But I know that it is also very difficult to stop thinking about the new taxes that a Kamala Harris administration will introduce, not just on what you earn during your lifetime, but also on what you choose to leave behind.

So you choose your wallet, no matter how much you have to hold your nose and how obvious the damage to the country will be.

My friends, the poor Trumpists,

While I can understand the motivating principles of the rich in supporting Trump, I have a hard time understanding the support of the middle class and the poor.

The Trump GOP is the party of the rich like never before. Tax cuts for the super-rich were the only legislative achievement of the Trump presidency. He tried with all his might to dismantle affordable health care.

The world’s richest man and other billionaires have poured some of their wealth into creating a social media ecosystem that convinces you to support the candidate who helps them, not you.

Do you think Elon Musk or Rupert Murdoch cares about your salary or healthcare?

The Democrats, on the other hand, have given you health protections for pre-existing conditions, child care tax credits, fixed drug costs, job-building laws to support America’s new chip industry, protections for Social Security and Medicare, and rebuilding the U.S. infrastructure, an unfulfilled promise from the Trump years .

Unfortunately, the ridiculous racist tropes of the Trump world of dark-skinned people out to eat your pets have some appeal. Many of you actually believe Trump when he says the vice president is stupid. Maybe you accept his racism and misogyny.

They believe him when he says Harris is a Marxist, a vice president who presided over a post-pandemic economy that is the envy of the world, lifted out of the ditch Trump left it in, with the stock market at an unimaginable rate Heights.

This is capitalism, baby.

But tell me, write back, hit the comment button and explain how Donald Trump, who was born rich, the darling of the super-rich, improved your life during his time as president and what you think he will do next would, other than repeat his life, a first act of legislation that cuts taxes for those who need it least.
