TJ Watt details how he gets “battle ready” with a consistent daily routine

At this point in his career, Pittsburgh Steelers outside linebacker TJ Watt is on a very clear path to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

He was the second fastest in NFL history to reach 100 sacks, already holds the Steelers’ all-time sacks record, has a Defensive Player of the Year award under his belt, and overall continues to put up some eye-popping numbers, I guess can claim to be the best defensive player in the NFL.

What you see on game days is the result of all the hard work and preparation Watt puts in throughout the week to put him in the best possible position to dominate. His preparation week is rather regimented, especially on a daily basis.

In a sit-down interview with ESPN’s Hannah Storm on Sunday, Watt explained what his day looks like from a preparation perspective. Not surprisingly, it’s very regimented down to the minute.

“I’m just very particular about the time. I come to the facility at 7:10 a.m. every day. I eat breakfast, I’m out of breakfast at 7:30. From 7:30 to 7:40 I lie in the cold tub. And then I go up at eight and watch a movie, and then at 8:30 we have meetings until we have lunch. And then right after we do the walkthrough, I have to get my lunch at a certain time,” Watt told Storm about his daily routine, according to video via ESPN. “But it’s not like I’m going crazy if I don’t do these things. It’s about consistency. It’s about spending months, years and seasons having great success and doing so over time when people try to play a plan against you. And when the lights come on, I know I’ve done everything I could to be ready for battle.

“And I know that the guy towards me most likely hasn’t done the things that I’ve been doing all week because I just want everything to fall into place because I’ve worked so hard. You put everything into it one day…”

Considering how intense Watt is on game days and how he becomes a completely different person, it’s no surprise that he has a regimented, minute-by-minute daily schedule that helps him prepare as best as possible for every game.

This type of mentality, discipline and overall commitment is what separates the good from the great. Doing everything humanly possible within one’s control helps take players to another level. Having this kind of regimented routine every day throughout the week helps him feel as prepared as possible, which has led to some great performances and a career so far that puts him on the right track for a spot in the hallowed halls of Canton .

In his younger years, Watt was perhaps a little more physically intense in his everyday life. Now in his 30-year-old season, Watt is wiser but still does everything in his power to ensure his body and mind are ready to fight on game days.

“As I get older, it’s not always about necessarily doing more because I can’t, I don’t want to put more strain on my body, but it still gets the mental repetitions and the little things, “The walkthroughs, the confinement , taking notes and trying to get as much out of the game as possible,” Watt added.

He has been outspoken in the past about cutting back on some things from a training standpoint, whether in the offseason or in season. He knows he doesn’t have to be as physical in that aspect of the game and so far it has seemed to be working as he has been able to stay healthy and stay on the field and dominate week in and week out.

It all goes back to the work done behind the scenes and out of the spotlight. This is where Watt differs. This is because he is disciplined and regulated in his daily routine.
