Tito Jackson suffered a medical emergency near a shopping mall in Gallup, New Mexico, just hours before his death, according to a Gallup Police Department news release.

Jackson, who died on Sunday, September 15, presumably suffered a heart attack while driving from New Mexico to Oklahoma. The founding member of the Jackson 5 was 70 years old.

On Monday, September 16, the Gallup Police published a statement with new details about Jackson’s death. At approximately 6:17 p.m. PT, an officer was “stopped near the American Heritage Plaza at 702 US Highway 491. The officer was alerted to a person requiring medical attention and immediately requested an ambulance.”

The press release continued: “The decedent was subsequently transported to a local hospital in Gallup, New Mexico, where he was pronounced dead. The hospital subsequently requested the attendance of detectives and the medical examiner’s office. The decedent was identified as 70-year-old Toriano ‘Tito’ Jackson of Tulsa, Oklahoma.”

The investigation is “still ongoing” and investigators are “interviewing witnesses,” the department said.
