Tigers vs. Guardians score, live updates: AL Central rivals play ALDS Game 5 for a chance to face the Yankees in ALCS

The Detroit Tigers and Cleveland Guardians meet in a crucial Game 5 on Saturday for a chance to face the New York Yankees, who punched their ticket to the American League Championship Series with a 3-1 series victory over the Kansas City Royals have solved.

Saturday’s game was postponed from evening to afternoon due to impending weather in Cleveland. In Thursday’s fifth game, the Tigers had a chance to tie the game, but the Guardians refused to fold, and pinch-hitter David Fry hit a go-ahead home run in the seventh inning.

The Tigers haven’t been to the ALCS since 2013, when they lost to the eventual champion Red Sox. Meanwhile, the Guardians defeated the Blue Jays in the 2016 ALCS before suffering a crushing loss to the Cubs in the World Series.

Tarik Skubal takes over for the Tigers on Saturday and looks to build on his stellar season, including his two previous postseason starts; The Cy Young favorite has yet to allow a run in 13 innings pitched so far in October. For the Guardians, it will be Matthew Boyd, who pitched 4 2/3 scoreless innings in Cleveland’s Game 2 loss to Detroit. Boyd made just eight starts late this season after returning from Tommy John surgery.

Game 1 of the ALCS takes place on Monday in New York.
