Through traffic closed near West Plains High School

The Texas Department of Transportation in Amarillo (TxDOT) announced Wednesday that it will evaluate a new traffic pattern at the intersection of Arden Road and SL 335 over the next few weeks, with the traffic change taking effect today.

Starting Wednesday, August 7, drivers traveling from Arden Road to West Plains High School will need to turn right onto SL 335 northbound and make a U-turn at Hillside Road. Drivers can then travel southbound on SL 335 and then turn right onto Arden Road to access the school.

Traffic coming from West Plains High School is directed to turn right onto SL 335 southbound, TxDOT said.

“Safety is always TxDOT’s top priority when it comes to road construction and maintenance,” TxDOT said in a Facebook post. “Over the past several months, TxDOT has been modeling several options to increase safety while maintaining mobility at this intersection.”

Message boards and traffic signs will be placed along the roads to inform road users of the new traffic pattern. TxDOT will evaluate the changes after a few weeks and coordinate with the City of Amarillo and Canyon ISD to determine next steps.

TxDOT said it will meet with Canyon ISD again in a few weeks to discuss whether any changes or improvements need to be made.

The fall semester at Canyon ISD is scheduled to begin on August 14.

Safety tips for drivers at the start of school

TxDOT also released the following safety tips for drivers in the traffic update:

  • Put away your phones: Using a portable electronic device while driving in a busy school zone is illegal.
  • Stop and yield the right of way to a pedestrian, bicyclist, or anyone else in a crosswalk. Seriously injuring someone who is lawfully in a crosswalk is now a federal crime punishable by prison time.
  • Pay attention to speed limit signs in school zones, as higher fines apply there.
  • Drop off and pick up your children at the designated areas of your school.
  • Keep an eye on children at bus stops. Also watch for children near buses and remember that they may not always look for vehicles before crossing the road. Watch for children running across the road or between vehicles.
  • Keep a safe distance from school buses as they stop frequently.
  • Do not pass a school bus if you see flashing red lights or an extended stop sign on a school bus, regardless of which direction you are traveling, unless the bus is in the opposite lane of a divided highway. Continue to pass once the bus has moved, the flashing lights stop flashing, or the bus driver signals permission to pass.
  • Allow enough time to reach your destination safely if this will affect your commute.
