Thousands without power as Debby brings wind gusts of up to 100 km/h

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – While the remnants of Debby did not cause major flooding, strong winds did down trees and down power lines in our area.

Winds were stronger than expected and the ground was wet, making it easier to uproot trees. Winds gusted up to 60 mph in the Champlain Valley. Rainfall ranged from 1 to 3 inches in Vermont and New Hampshire and from 3 to 6 inches in New York.

Since Saturday morning, more than 20,000 people in Vermont have been without power, the majority of them in Chittenden, Addison, Orleans and Franklin counties.

Green Mountain Power says crews have already worked to restore power to over 35,000 customers, and with the help of outside crews arriving in Vermont this morning, crews have made significant progress.

Green Mountain Power spokeswoman Kristin Kelly said crews worked during the height of the storm and through the night to restore power, a process that will take some time.

“We expect this will be a multi-day recovery effort for our customers. Vermont has experienced a brutal summer with many storms and those storms have caused terrible damage across the state,” she said.

In northern New York State, more than 2,500 people woke up in the dark on Saturday morning.

Flooding concerns have eased as all rivers that swelled on Friday and into Saturday morning are expected to continue to recede.
