The Netflix true crime documentary focuses on the Seawater family, who were children and former students of Arthur Leigh Allen, and they appear in This is the zodiac speaking and uncover some pretty compelling circumstantial evidence against him. David Seawater, Connie Seawater and Don Seawater were all close to Allen, and it is clear to see how contradictory they all are even today. Connie alludes to Allen possibly confessing to the Zodiac crimes, revealing that she even asked him years later and told Allen that if he told her he would have to kill her. Granted, it could have been a joke, but all other evidence suggests there is a lot of truth in the statement.

David got a clearer answer when he asked Allen about the murders. Allen was seriously ill in 1992 and his mother urged David to reach out to her son. When he did, Allen shockingly admitted to drugging and sexually abusing his sister Connie years ago. David obviously always suspected that Allen was the Zodiac Killer, and this surprising admission about the attack on his sister led him to ask the big question: Was Arthur Leigh Allen the Zodiac Killer? David reveals in the documentary that Allen actually answered the question and actually confessed that he was the Zodiac Killer. Allen died not long after this alleged confession.

The evidence against Allen is quite convincing and he was probably the Zodiac Killer

The confession alone is obviously shocking enough, and the Seawater family appears credible, but there is also other circumstantial evidence to support their claims. The Seawater family reveals that they were taken to some of the California locations where the Zodiac murders took place, and those memories were rekindled in David Fincher’s life Zodiac was released in cinemas in 2007. Fincher, always known for his perfectionism in his work, was careful to use the exact murder locations in his film, and this brought back memories of Seawater when they saw it in the theater. And what’s even more shocking is that they believe Allen took them with him when he committed certain murders.

The double murder of Robert Domingos and Linda Edwards early June 4, 1963 was not officially attributed to the Zodiac Killer, but the attacks bear a striking resemblance to his particular modus operandi. The Seawater family believes they may have been taken while Allen committed the horrific act. In the documentary, they tell a special story in which Allen showed up at their home in 1963 to take them on a day trip to Tajiguas Beach. However, when they arrived at the location, Allen scurried off somewhere and returned suspiciously red-colored hands. He also appeared to be in a panic and forced her into the car before fleeing the scene. Of course, childhood memories can be misinterpreted and fade somewhat over the years, but the Seawater family is absolutely convinced of the legitimacy of this story.

Allen was arrested for child molestation in 1974, which led to the Zodiac murders stopping altogether, and this is further compelling evidence that may point to his guilt. But just because Allen was responsible for a heinous crime like this doesn’t mean he was capable of murder. But the fact that the murders have actually stopped is quite strange, especially since they were so common before Allen’s incarceration. This is the zodiac speaking does a good job of showing a softer side to Arthur Leigh Allen, but rather than hinting at his potential innocence, it just confirms how conflicted the man was. He could be an inspiring teacher and role model, but he could also be capable of serial murder. The two things don’t seem to go hand in hand, but in this case they might. While the Zodiac Murders remain an unsolved crime, this documentary makes a compelling case that Arthur Leigh Allen was most likely responsible for the brutal Bay Area murders.
