These additions have paid off for the Steelers so far

In the era of Omar Khan Steelers Fans have seen their team be more aggressive in free agency than in years past. Kevin Colbert always seemed lazy in that regard, but Khan was the opposite. He leaves no stone unturned and has brought in some serious players. The Steelers defense was on another level at the start of the season with new additions DeShon Elliott And Donte Jackson be big contributors.

Addition by subtraction

The Steelers acquired Donte Jackson in a trade with the Carolina Panthers during the offseason. Unfortunately, Diontae Johnson was the player the Steelers gave up in the trade, but it paid off. Pittsburgh’s wide receiver room is hurting in Johnson’s absence, but the defense is thriving with a true cornerback alongside it Joey Porter Jr.

After six seasons with the Carolina Panthers, it must be refreshing to move to a new team with a real culture, and Jackson has enjoyed it so far. In seven games as a Steeler, Jackson has three interceptions with 75 return yards and 14 solo tackles. Quarterbacks targeted Jackson 28 times, with a completion rate of just 53.6%. He leads the Steelers in interceptions.

Unfortunately, Jackson was injured in Pittsburgh’s Week 7 game against the Jets. The severity of his injury is unknown at this time, but the promotion of CJ Henderson from the practice squad suggests the Steelers could be without Jackson until after the bye week. It was beneficial to have the 28-year veteran with him Beanie Bishop and Porter Jr.

Former rival became Steeler

A former Raven has been a key part of the Steelers defense this season, and he’s not who you think. While Patrick Queen was fine, DeShon Elliott was a big difference maker on defense for Pittsburgh. Elliott said Queen helped recruit him to Pittsburgh, which must make Baltimore sick.

Through seven games, Elliott has already established himself as a fan favorite in Pittsburgh. He plays Steeler football and is not afraid to take a hit at any time. It’s not him Troy Polamalubut he is the best strong safety Pittsburgh has had since then. In his first seven games as a Steeler, Elliott had one interception, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery. He also has a team-leading 51 total tackles.

The first-year Steeler has 33 solo tackles, tied for the team lead Minkah Fitzpatrick. Elliott’s presence has also allowed Fitzpatrick to return to his midfield role. With the additions of Elliott and Jackson, the Steelers have a true secondary for the first time in a long time. Elliott has only missed two tackles in his 53 chances this season. If he gets his hands on you, he’ll drag you down with him.

His only interception this season came in Week 1 against the Falcons, meaning he has another interception coming his way soon. The Steelers will need it during the stacked schedule following the bye week, which includes all division games and matchups with the Chiefs and Eagles. Defense will be crucial if they want to compete in these games.
