The White Sox suffered their 117th loss when Adams’ infield single in the 13th inning helped the Angels to a 4-3 victory

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Eric Wagaman scored with one out in the 13th inning when a grounder by Jordyn Adams bounced off the glove of third baseman Miguel Vargas as the Los Angeles Angels handed the Chicago White Sox their 117th loss and held on for a 4-3 victory on Wednesday.

Instead of winning two consecutive series for the first time in four months, the White Sox tied with the 1916 Philadelphia Athletics for the third-most losses since 1900.

Chicago (36-117) must finish its final nine games 7-2 to avoid matching the 1900 record of 120 losses set by the New York Mets, who joined the expansion team in 1962. The 2003 Detroit Tigers hold the American League record with 119 losses.

Things won’t get any easier for the White Sox, who begin a three-game series in San Diego on Friday. The Padres hold the first NL wild-card spot but have moved to within 3 1/2 games of the struggling Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West.

“We get the same question every day, we’re focused on one series at a time and one game at a time. Everything else is irrelevant right now,” said interim manager Grady Sizemore. “It’s going to be a tough series (in San Diego). They’re playing for something and we’ve got to do our best to have a chance.”

After the series in San Diego, the White Sox will end the season with a six-game home game against the Angels (September 24-26) and the Detroit Tigers (September 27-29).

In the 10th and 12th innings, the Angels had all bases loaded, but were finally able to prevail in the 13th inning.

“We had opportunities to do something throughout the game, but we couldn’t extend the run, especially in overtime. But we kept going and finally got lucky,” said Angels manager Ron Washington.

Wagaman was the automatic runner at second base and advanced to third base on Logan O’Hoppe’s ground ball to right field. With the infield back in, Adams hit a sharp grounder from Jairo Iriarte (0-1) that Vargas couldn’t catch cleanly, giving the Angels their fifth walk-off win of the season.

“I was just trying to put it in play and give the runner on third base a chance to score,” Adams said.

The White Sox had the bases loaded with two outs in the 13th inning, but José Quijada (2-0) struck out Yoán Moncada to end the run. It was Moncada’s first Major League appearance since April 9. He was activated from the 60-day injured list on Monday after five months missing due to a strain of the left adductor muscle.

The game went into overtime tied 1-1. Both teams scored in the 10th inning when Chicago’s Korey Lee scored on Vargas’ sacrifice fly and Los Angeles’ Gustavo Campero got an RBI base hit.

In the 11th inning, the teams again traded runs with RBI singles from Andrew Benintendi and Wagaman of the White Sox.

Andrew Vaughn opened the fourth inning with his team-tying 19th home run. The designated hitter — who hit 7-for-20 and two home runs during his five-game hitting streak — slammed a high inside sinker from Halos starter Jack Kochanowicz into the left-field bullpen for his second home run of the series.

The White Sox have hit nine home runs in their last five games after managing just six in their previous 13 meetings.

The Angels tied the score in the eighth inning when a line drive by Taylor Ward bounced off the glove of White Sox shortstop Nicky Lopez and into left field to bring home Zach Neto.
