The warming trend will last for a few more days, followed by a significant cooling

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) – Temperatures will change slightly over the next few days, but precipitation is unlikely.

Warmer but stay dry

As the sun sets, the temperatures drop steadily again and last until the night hours. Skies remain clear and winds should remain light. The biggest change here will be a subtle shift in these winds, shifting to an easterly direction across much of the area. The impact of this shift will be minimal and lows are expected to be in the mid to upper 40s similar to this morning.

Tomorrow we should end up roughly where we were today. This consistent weather has been the theme so far this week! Widespread sunshine is expected and high temperatures will be in the upper 70s to lower 80s. The wind turns south again, but remains weak.

Friday will see a major increase in warmer elevations as winds increase from the southwest. These breezes will increase our overall temperatures by at least a few degrees, with lows in the lower 50s to start the day and highs in the mid to upper 80s to finish. This puts our highs close to the records for that day.

Cold front brings cooling but no rain

A cold front arrives early Saturday that will shift our winds northward and initiate a fairly significant cooling. However, the influx of cooler temperatures will be limited for now and we won’t see a major drop early in the weekend. After lows in the 50s, highs are still reaching lows into the mid 70s.

The more significant decline begins on Sunday. The northwesterly wind will become stronger and will attract a different air mass than Canada. This pushes highs into the lower to mid 60s to round out the weekend.

The coldest portion of this air mass arrives at the start of the following work and school week. For the first time in several weeks, highs could actually fall below normal for most of us on Monday and Tuesday. The maximum values for most of us will then only be in the 50s.

It is the night phases on this route that could be a little more remarkable. The first frost or freeze of the season is possible depending on how cold it can get. Currently, our forecast is that a large portion of TV9’s viewing area is at risk on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings.

It’s getting a little warmer again

From Wednesday, temperatures will rise back above normal for mid-October. Highs will reach into the 60s for Wednesday and Thursday, with lows in the 30s and 40s. Just in time for Friday, the 70s are returning for some of us.

Note that precipitation has not been mentioned at all so far. Our current 9-day forecast remains completely dry.

Eastern Iowa is likely to see a few more warm days before cooler conditions arrive.
