• The very first Earvin Johnson Senior Car Truck Show was held in Lansing.

Many neighbors came to Union Missionary Baptist Church to see some vintage cars and a Central Michigan legend. From a 1958 Chevrolet Impala to a 1973 Impala and special memories of a dad’s car for a 1977 Everett High School graduate.

“I loved the Riviera, that was my favorite piece because I took it from him,” said Magic Johnson.

Saturday’s classic car show in Lansing highlighted the best of Central Michigan and benefitted two local organizations, including Magic Johnson himself.

“To honor my father’s memory, but also to link it with two local organizations, we see that the police are here and we want to make sure that we can be a blessing to their families if something happens to them,” Magic Johnson said.

The car show benefitted Santa’s First Responders and Michigan Concerns Of Police Survivors.

“It’s an absolute blessing to have something this big brought to us,” said Ken Phinney of Santa’s First Responders.

Those responsible believe that the proceeds from this event will make a great contribution to supporting the children in our neighborhood.

“It gives us more opportunities to help children in need, especially those with cancer. It’s just wonderful,” said Ken Phinney of Santa’s First Responders.

And at an event full of memories. I ran into Magic Johnson’s old boss at Quality Dairy, Ken Martin, who remembers putting Magic in the cash register the summer before he transferred to Michigan State.

“Pretty amazing, because the store had a cigarette shelf upstairs, and because Magic was so big, people would come in and they could only see him from down here,” said Ken Martin, owner of Quality Dairy.

Magic tells me he’s looking forward to this event becoming a staple in the community for years to come.
