Valencia’s La Liga game against Real Madrid on Saturday is expected to be postponed due to flash flooding and extreme weather conditions in the region.

La Liga has asked the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) to postpone the game to a later date, along with Villarreal’s clash with Rayo Vallecano.

Local Valencian government officials said on Wednesday evening that flash floods caused by torrential rains in the eastern region of the province had left 92 people dead and many more still missing.

Earlier on Wednesday, the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) announced the postponement of the Copa del Rey match between Valencia and Parla Escuela, which was scheduled to take place in Parla, just 24 kilometers from Madrid.

Valencia is under a Red Weather Alert for much of the state. A Red Alert precedes extreme or unusual weather events and is the department’s most extreme warning. There are also yellow warnings in other parts of Spain, indicating lower risk weather.

The Mestalla Stadium in Valencia has been made available as an emergency aid station for volunteers to collect food and essential supplies for flood victims.

Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric sent well wishes to those affected by the weather conditions, saying on Wednesday: “A lot of love and strength to all the people of Valencia and the other provinces affected by the storm.”

Valencia sit bottom of La Liga with just one win in their first 11 games this season, while Real Madrid are second – six points behind leaders Barcelona.
