The dump truck that crashed through the wooden planks of a covered bridge between Gorham and Windham weighed more than six times the posted weight limit.

Maine State Police confirmed that the driver of the Ford F750 was issued a $2,500 weight violation for attempting to drive the 36,000-pound truck across Babb’s Bridge, where the weight limit is set at three tons, or 6,000 pounds.

Police identified the driver as 37-year-old Joshua Polewarzyk of Limington. He was able to get out of the truck after it crashed through the bridge Friday afternoon, suffering minor injuries.

The truck belongs to a Biddeford-based company called The Driveway Guys. The company did not return a call Tuesday morning.

Three tow truck operators worked for hours Friday afternoon to right the overturned truck and move it up a hill next to the bridge, where it was then loaded onto a tow truck. With the road closed, Gorham’s neighbors, kayakers and paddleboarders watched the difficult recovery operation.

The bridge will have to be closed for months for repairs, even in the “best-case scenario” in which only the bridge deck needs to be replaced, a spokesman for the Maine Department of Transportation said Friday evening. The single-lane bridge is used by around 360 vehicles every day.
