The team found a way to win against the Jets

The Bills defeated the Jets 23-20 on Monday Night Football this week to take the lead in the AFC East as the only team in the division with a winning record.

QB Josh Allen and Co. rebounded from their first two losses of the season in back-to-back weeks by returning to their scoring ways early.

After scoring a touchdown and a field goal, Buffalo appeared to go into halftime with a 10-point lead.

That is, until four-time NFL MVP and South American tea enthusiast Aaron Rodgers threw a signature 52-yard Hail Mary touchdown as time expired to end the first half.

“Yeah, obviously kind of a gut punch,” Allen said postgame about Rodgers’ latest performance. “I go in thinking you have a two-point lead there and they catch a Hail Mary.”

But in the second half the Bills fought their way back into the game.

The offense added two more touchdown throws later in the game, tying the game at 20 points each before a Tyler Bass field goal gave Buffalo a lead they would not lose until the end of the game.

“We fight through adversity, come to halftime, regroup and say, let’s just take control one play at a time,” Allen added. “We didn’t get as many points in the second half as I would have liked, but we found a way.”

Allen completed 19 of 25 passes for 215 yards with a 127.9 rating and two touchdowns through the air and one on the ground.

“I wanted to come out and play a clean game and get through my reads quickly,” Allen continued.

His teammates trusted his ability to bounce back from consecutive losses.

“We fully expected him to be able to take this (loss),” left-back David Edwards said via The Buffalo News. “Some of the plays he did – great.”

The Bills improved to 4-2 at the top of their division and have never lost three straight games with Allen at quarterback. His playmaking had a significant impact on the win column this season.

“He’s just Josh Allen,” noted tight end Dalton Kincaid. “He can do wonders with the ball in his hands.”

The club’s quarterback’s leadership in achieving victory was also noticed and appreciated by its head coach.

“A good division win on the road,” head coach Sean McDermott told the media. “The last three away games in a row I thought it was a tough win, led by Josh. The offense got off to a good start and established the line of scrimmage, really in the game.”

Allen understands the importance of “double counting” division games into the postseason, a concept that may also apply to key games against the AFC’s top playoff contenders on the Bills’ schedule.

“Our number one goal is to make the playoffs, and you do that by winning your division,” Allen said. “We understand the seriousness of this type of game as a straight-up win leaves us 4-2 and 2 1/2 games ahead instead of 3-3 and in second place.”
