Nearly three years ago, Tom Holland headlined Spider-Man: No Way Home alongside his two immediate predecessors, Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire, in the highest-grossing film Sony has ever released. Holland hasn’t exactly returned to the MCU since then, and he hasn’t even made cameo appearances. Regardless, Holland is still on board for Peter Parker’s next adventure and has already read the script for Spider-Man 4.

“I read (the Spider-Man 4 script) three weeks ago and it really lit a fire in me,” Holland said during his recent appearance on Rich Roll’s YouTube show. “Zendaya and I sat down and read it together and we were sometimes jumping around the living room thinking, ‘This is a real movie that deserves the fans’ respect.’ But there are a few things we need to figure out before we can really get this going.

Holland didn’t mention that Shang-Chi director Destin Daniel Cretton is in talks to direct Spider-Man 4, but said there are “fantastic people working on it right now.” The actor also noted, “We have a creative draft, a pitch and a draft which is excellent. It still needs work, but the writers are doing a great job.”

Additionally, Holland reiterated that he doesn’t want to come back for a film that doesn’t measure up to the three Spider-Man films he’s already made. And he’s using his growing influence in the industry to make it happen.

“I’m at a point now where I can say ‘no,’ and now that I’ve been given that power, I’m having a hard time figuring out what the right thing to do is. I think that’s the learning curve I’m on I’m in the midst of dealing with this new sense of power and making sure I don’t abuse it. But to make sure I’m doing what’s best for me and not for the studio, I don’t want to make another film for the sake of making it.

Sony and Marvel have not yet set a date for Spider-Man 4.
