The Seahawks have the perfect opportunity to make a significant coaching change

The Seattle Seahawks have lost their last two games, and neither loss was close. It’s time to shake up the workforce structure, and the perfect opportunity exists. Thank you to the Jets for the gift wrapping.

Obviously, the Seahawks’ last two games didn’t go according to plan. A more intellectual person might say that they achieved suboptimal results. I’ll just say the Hawks sucked. At least against the Lions, there were some extenuating circumstances. It certainly didn’t help that we lost six defenders in the second half. But Jared Goff setting a league record is unacceptable.

At first glance, a 20-29 loss isn’t as bad as a 29-42 loss. But the Lions are good, while the Giants – well, let’s be kind and just not say so much. Yes, their last six points came on a blocked field goal that would have tied the game for the Hawks. Seattle was completely dominated in all three phases of the game. None other than Mike Macdonald has confirmed this. And that, dear 12s, is what coach Mike Macdonald brings up.

Yes, I’m fully aware that it’s Tuesday and the Hawks have a game in about 48 hours, depending on when you’re reading this. There are several keys to Seattle achieving victory over San Francisco. I agree with all three players Mr. Coleman mentioned, especially Walker. At this point, I think the Hawks need more than just on-field performances to maximize their results. They need a restructuring of the coaching staff.

No, I’m definitely not calling for Mike Macdonald, Ryan Grubb or any of the Seattle staff to be fired. Five games in the first season, that would be absurd. Yes, that’s a stupid thought, even if the Twitterverse seems to like the idea. It’s not that Luis was special, but his tweets were just one of dozens of similar ones.

Luis, I’m sure God and your mother love you, but you’re just as wrong about firing Macdonald as you are about the capitalization. Macdonald doesn’t need to be fired. He has to be the head coach and only the head coach. With a new defensive system, a new offensive system and newcomers at all three coordinator positions, Mike Macdonald needs to focus on the bigger picture of the game.

That leads me to the great opportunity that exists in Seattle. I understand why Macdonald might be hesitant to hand over the management of the game to Aden Durde, the Hawks’ DC. Let’s face it: If he doesn’t call the plays, he’s the DC in name only. He did an excellent job as the Cowboys’ defensive line coach, but that doesn’t exactly give him the experience he needs to call the right defense in the moment and on every play.

The New York Jets have fired their head coach Robert Saleh. Whether or not this was due to tensions with Aaron Rodgers is irrelevant. The Jets were 20-26 under the defensive-minded Saleh. The fact that he focused on that side of the ball didn’t help his relationship with Rodgers.

Frankly, I don’t care about his record with New York. What I find fascinating is their record on defense. In his first year as head coach, the JETS ranked 32nd in defensive yards allowed. As a sophomore, he completely failed to lead the team to fourth in yards and points allowed. Last year they were third in yardage, and so far in 2024, the Jets rank second in the league in yardage and fifth in points.

Most 12ers are well aware that Saleh was the Niners’ defensive coordinator from 2017-2020. I’m all too aware, I might add. He inherited a team that ranked 32nd in both points allowed and yards allowed. In his first season, he took the Niners to 25th and 24th place, respectively. In 2018, the 49ers finished 28th and 13th. By 2019, Saleh had moved them up to eighth and second overall. Points and yards are allowed here too.

The team slowed down a bit in 2020, his final year before joining the Jets. Still, the Niners finished a respectable 17th in points and fifth in yardage. Not surprisingly, Nick Bosa missed 15 games this year.

The point is that Robert Saleh is a damn good defensive coach. I don’t care that he can’t handle a selfish prima donna QB, I just want him to help Macdonald on defense. The Seahawks must sign Saleh today. I don’t care if they name him special assistant for defense or hire him as a DC and relegate Durde to the assistant position. They have to bring him into the team now and hand over the management of the game to him quickly. Not Thursday, my goodness. That’s not me The crazy.

But Saleh needs to be on the roster before this game and play in Atlanta in Week 7. This way, Mike Macdonald can finally become head coach and address the issues that have plagued the Hawks over the past two weeks.
