The rapper of “Type of Way” and Rich Gang was 34

Rapper Rich Homie Quan, known for his 2013 hit “Type of Way,” has reportedly died. He was 34 years old.

Quan, born Dequantes Devontay Lamar, died Thursday at an Atlanta hospital, according to Rolling Stone and The Associated Press. The cause of death was not disclosed.

The rapper’s family told TMZ they were “shocked and heartbroken” by Quan’s death.

USA TODAY has reached out to a representative for Quan for comment.

Several of Quan’s musical colleagues mourned his death on social media, including Atlanta rapper Boosie Badazz, who claimed Quan died of a drug overdose. USA TODAY has contacted representatives for Badazz for more information.

“Just heard @RichHomieQuan overdosed‼️,” Badazz wrote in an X-post. “Spoke to (Q)uan the other day.”

R&B singer Jacquees, who collaborated with Quan on the 2014 single “Feel It,” remembered the rapper in an emotional post on X. “Rest in peace my brother Rich homie Quan. I love you forever,” he wrote.

Quan began a career in hip hop after serving 15 months in prison for burglary. He made his musical debut in 2012 with the mixtapes “I Go in on Every Song” and “Still Goin In.”

Quan’s 2013 single “Type of Way” marked his mainstream breakthrough. The trap track sold half a million copies and a remix also featured Meek Mill and Jeezy.

The 2015 mixtape “If You Ever Think I Will Stop Goin’ in Ask RR (Royal Rich)” gave Quan another hit, “Flex (Ooh, Ooh, Ooh)”, which was certified triple platinum.

Quan released his debut album, Rich as in Spirit, in March 2018 on Motown Records.

“I never thought I would make it this far with music,” Quan told XXL magazine in 2014. “Music was just a hobby at first. I never thought I would be on stage and rocking shows. After I got out of prison, I started taking it more seriously and that’s when my dream came true.”

Quan was also a member of Rich Gang, a hip-hop collective under Cash Money Records. Current members include Birdman, Jacquees, and Young Thug.

Young Thug, who is on trial in Atlanta for organized crime, drug and weapons offenses, was questioned about an alleged rivalry with Quan during a hearing on Wednesday, according to footage shared on social media.

Kenneth “Lil Woody” Copeland, a former associate of Young Thug and a key prosecution witness, was asked on the stand whether Young Thug had a problem with Rich Homie Quan “bringing members of the If Gang to his apartment.”

Instead of answering the question, Copeland repeated it and asked it directly to Young Thug, whereupon a court official cut him off.
