The Postal Service have released a brand new remix of their popular song The District Sleeps Alone Tonight by electro-pop duo Sylvan Esso, listen below.

The title – originally on the band’s critically acclaimed album Give up – comes before their extended co-headliner for the 20th anniversary Give up transatlanticism Tour with Death Cab for Cutie. This extraordinary live tour celebrates the 20th anniversaries of the two bands’ influential albums from 2003, The Postal Service’s RIAA platinum-certified album Give up and Death Cab for Cuties’ RIAA platinum-certified, groundbreaking fourth studio album Transatlanticism – two classics released just eight months apart, with a recording budget of just $20,000.

Of the remix, which is being released via Sub Pop, Jimmy Tamborello of The Postal Service says, “I love Sylvan Esso and was thrilled to hear the song through their ears. It turned out so good, big and bouncy and fun!”

Sylvan Esso talks about being asked to reinterpret the song: “The District Sleeps Alone Tonight was a formative song for both of us. Nick remembers hearing the promo lyrics from his car’s speakers while delivering pizza – Amelia remembers hearing it in the back of a delivery truck during her lunch break in freshman year. We both thought the song touched on something new at the time – and to be asked to reinterpret it now is an honor.”

The frontman of both bands, Ben Gibbard, said: “I know for a fact that I will never experience a year like 2003 again. The record “The Postal Service” came out, Transatlanticism came out. Those two records will be on my tombstone, and that’s totally fine with me. I’ve never had a more creative year.”
