The Patriots make a big trade in the way-too-early 2025 5-round mock draft

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

The Patriots currently own the No. 1 overall pick heading into Week 6. We expect them to continue to struggle and remain at the top of the draft selection board in 2025.

The team lacks talent, so one would assume that staying at No. 1 and making a selection would be the best approach here. However, because the Patriots already have their franchise quarterback, they have the luxury of fielding trade offers for the first overall pick.

The Chicago Bears traded up from No. 10 to No. 1 and selected Bryce Young in 2023. They gave up two first-round picks, two second-round picks and wide receiver DJ Moore. The best comparison to a player as valuable as Moore from the New York Giants would be Malik Nabers, and they obviously won’t move him anytime soon.

So Jalin Hyatt is a consolation prize. He’s on a rookie deal and the Patriots need speed, which Hyatt has in abundance on the field. He’s nowhere near Moore’s level, but he’s a good throw-in for a team looking to add talent all over the place. This makes sense considering Hyatt is underutilized in New York.

The Giants tried to trade to the Patriots for Drake Maye this year but were rebuffed. Maybe they will reconsider another trade-up scenario with the team.

The Patriots receive: 2025 first-round pick, 2025 second-round pick, 2026 first-round pick, 2026 second-round pick, 2026 fourth-round pick and wide receiver Jalin Hyatt

Giants receive: No. 1 pick
