The National Weather Service meteorologist expects wetter and colder temperatures in Utah

A National Weather Service meteorologist said Utah will soon get colder and wetter.

“I’m as ready as I could be,” said Sean Monson, a Salt Lake City resident.

Meteorologist Hayden Mahan said Utah had a really warm October, but then flipped a switch. Now, in early November, Utah is experiencing a much colder, more active weather pattern.

MORE UTAH WEATHER

“We’re only about a week into the snowpack formation season, but so far it’s a relatively normal snowpack. Relatively healthy,” Mahan said.

Mahan explained that Utah could soon experience colder and wetter conditions with La Niña – a phase of the climate cycle.

“We expect that we will continue to build up the snowpack over the next few weeks into December and January. It is still unclear what awaits us,” said Mahan.

After two consecutive years of above-average rainfall that benefited water reservoirs, Mahan said there was hope for another year of favorable conditions.

“If we could see near or even above normal precipitation across the state for a third year in a row, that would really benefit our reservoirs. Our reservoirs are still very healthy,” Mahan said.

“For the sake of the health of the state and the water situation, I would like to see more snow,” Monson added.

“This is a good start to November,” said Mahan. Tuesday’s storm was expected to bring more snow to higher elevations.
