The National Weather Service is forecasting even more sweltering heat for the Phoenix and Las Vegas areas this week

PHOENIX (AP) — Parts of Arizona and Nevada are expected to experience even more sweltering heat this week.

The National Weather Service announced Sunday that an extreme heat warning is in effect for the Phoenix metropolitan area and other parts of south-central and northwest Arizona from Tuesday through Thursday.

During this period, temperatures could reach 43.8 °C (111 °F) or more.

“During the first few weeks of June, temperatures begin to rise significantly in many places,” said Todd Shoemake of the National Weather Service in Albuquerque. “In Southern California, southern Nevada and southwestern Arizona, temperatures often reach triple digits.”

Last Thursday, temperatures in Phoenix reached 43.3 °C (110 °F) for the first time this year, with a record high of 45 °C (113 °F).

Meanwhile, dangerously hot weather is forecast for downtown Las Vegas, with highs ranging from 47.7 °C (108 °F) on Tuesday to 43.8 °C (111 °F) on Wednesday.

In Las Vegas, temperatures reached 43.8 °C (111 °F) last Thursday and 43.3 °C (110 °F) last Friday, both record highs for those days, each one degree Fahrenheit higher.

In Albuquerque, where the maximum temperature at this time of year is usually 31.7 °C (89 °F), the record of 37.7 °C (100 °F) set in 1981 was broken on Friday.

In New Mexico, where the high temperature in Albuquerque at this time of year is usually 31.7 °C (89 °F), the city on Friday broke the record of 37.7 °C (100 °F) set in 1981.

But right now, rain is a bigger concern than heat. Thunderstorms on Monday could cause flash flooding in the burn scar of the 2022 Calf Canyon/Hermits Peak Fire, which changed the landscape of San Miguel, Mora and Taos counties in northern New Mexico.
